Frenzied Waters – Dead Drop

Game: Frenzied Waters
Type: Dead Drop
Location: Miami, FL – Washington, DC – Detroit, MI – Chicago, IL – Dallas, TX – Philadelphia, PA – Los Angeles, CA – Atlanta, GA – New York City, NY – Boston, MA – San Francisco, CA
Date: Dropped July 7th and July 13th
Status: Complete (first 2 drops)

Frenzied Waters, the new promotional game for Discovery Channel’s Shark Week, has released 11 news capsules into the wild, according to their website at FrenziedWaters.com and their Twitter account @FrenziedWaters. The capsules are believed to hold artifacts from different tragic events regarding sharks.

Update: It seems as if there will be a total of three different drops in these cities. One last week, one today and one next week (July 20th). So the earlier tweets from @FrenziedWaters saying that the capsules in certain cities have been found do not apply to the second group. Wish that had been made clearer. Also wish there was a mute button on the main page. And I still want to know what it wanted me to sign into Facebook for. I authorized it, but all I get is the loading twirl and nothing more.

Note: The Confirmed status on each of these drops is my best guess based upon the tweets from @FrenziedWaters and may or may not be accurate – especially when they start to overlap.

The hidden capsules should be similar to the one already pictured on Frenzied Water’s Flickr page. Other than that, there has been no specific information on what to expect at these coordinates. The capsules have been located inside businesses. At least two have been inside dive shops, but a third was found within a boutique shop, so they really could be at any business in the area, so make sure you ask around.

  1. Hello,
We will publish a post very soon about Frenzed Waters on our blog. Even if non-US residents can not take part of the game for the moment, I think it is a good way to talk about ARGs.
I like the very engaging Rabbit Hole. I hope this spoon of “traditionnal viral techniques” won’t give a crappy commercial ARG.
You know which studio is behind ?

i believe tht this is leading to a special during shark week on the increasing number of fresh water shark attacks.

  3. Julien: This is being run by Campfire Media. They have a post on their blog about it: http://www.campfirenyc.com/2009/07/10/frenziedwaterscom-returns-fear-to-the-ocean/

  4. I’m in Dallas and can collect the drop(s) here if the other players need them! I haven’t been following this game, but I’m always happy to help. Is there a main thread for this anywhere or should I just contact this blog?

  5. Laura: Considering how widespread this promotion has gotten, I’m not sure there is any one main thread where coordination is taking place. Probably the best place would be the Discovery Channel’s Notes Facebook page or just the @FrenziedWaters Twitter.

I can try this evening or maybe in the AM on the DC drops. But still no word on what to look for beyond the picture? I saw a tweet from Ari0ck that said they should be inside a building – does anyone know what kind of building/business seems to be likely?

Update – took a quick run to the Georgetown location – a couple blocks down from a movie theater with payphones (:P). Tried two stores and a restaurant, no dice. Do we have any more info about the likely locations? Because there were office buildings I did not try, a park I did not search (who plants suspicious containers in a park in DC?), and I stayed within a block either way of the GPS location.

    Any input appreciated!

Oops. I was a block over. Maybe tomorrow.

  10. Aliendial: Based on what I’ve seen so far, 2 have been in dive shops and 1 was at the South Street Seaport, so I’m guessing possibly things having to do with diving or water or fish in some way. Beyond that, I have no advice.

  11. Aliendial,

A few have also been in antique shops. If there isn’t a store/shop that’s marine related look for an antique shop. Most of them seem to be indoors, so ask about the Shark Week/Discovery Channel Scavenger Hunt when you find your suspected shop.

I asked at the scuba shop I found mine at (called beforehand actually) and they confirmed they had it.

    Hope that helps.

Also, ah, the July 13th dead drop for Miami has been found. By me.

    Booyah.

  12. Aliendial, try that boutique on that corner actually. I read one person found theirs in a designer boutique so it might be there.

  13. Chicago’s week2 has been claimed! Found mine at an antique shop too (Two Sided – 2958 N Clark)…

  14. I’ve got the two Dallas drops – photos here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/lhall/collections/72157621336074357/

I’m kind of bummed now that I’ve found out that all series jars are the same, instead of each containing different artifacts. Also, only one code per series actually unlocks a video on the site — it’s whoever gets there first.

I thought that finding a jar would help unravel part of the story, open new videos, add to the layers of fiction, etc. which is why I went to the pickups as soon as I found out there were some in my town. It’s very cool to have these jars, but I wish they actually contributed something to the tale.

So – I got it and twitpic’d it all but while #frenziedwaters tweet/acknowledged my initial report they haven’t acknowlegded my twitpics of everything. But they found the blog post of the one who beat me to the vintage clothing store in Georgetown.

My drop was at a purveryor of antique house fixtures: The Brass Knob. Full of lovely old doorknobs, switchplates, chandeliers and so on. Quite lovely.
